How to Make Handmade Soaps with Olive Oil

Steps

  1. Weigh your oils and mix them. Heat the oils to 130F (55C). You can heat them in oven or on burner.

  2. Put on your gloves, safety goggles and mask.

  3. Measure water in a glass bowl.

  4. Weigh lye accurately and add into pre measured water.
    • REMEMBER- NEVER EVER EVER ADD WATER TO LYE. Always add lye to water. This solution will heat up automatically.

  5. When temperature of both oil and lye solution fall to 110F (43C), slowly add lye solution to your oils with continuous stirring.

  6. Stir your mixture until you reach trace.
    • If you stir with spatula or spoon, your mixture will need at least an hour to reach trace. But if you use a stick blender, it will trace within 10 min.
    • To test for trace, dip a spatula or spoon into the mix and dribble a bit of it back into the pot. If it leaves a little "trace" behind, you're there.

  7. Add color and essential oils at this step if you want.
    • You can use micas, natural pigments like coffee/cocoa powder or lab colours. You can use essential oils such as lavender oil, sandalwood oil, etc.
    • Mix them properly.

  8. Pour your mix into silicone moulds.

  9. Cover your moulds with cardboard and wrap a warm cloth around it. Keep it for 24 hours.

  10. After 24 hours, remove your soaps from moulds and keep them for curing for at least 4 weeks. The process of curing soap allows the excess moisture in the bars to evaporate, leaving a harder and longer-lasting bar.

  11. After 4-6 weeks your soaps are ready for use.

Tips

  • This procedure has 5% superfat. i.e. only 95% of the total oils has been converted into soap, while remaining 5% is present as oil.
  • The temperature difference between both the phases (oils and lye solution) should be max 5C. Keep the temperature difference minimum.
  • If you use water soluble colour, mix it into few ml of water and add to your mix. If colour is oil soluble, use oil.
  • Add essential oils in mix when temperature of mix is below the flash points of essential oils or else your essential oils will flash.
  • You can use different combinations and amounts of oils. Search online for a lye calculator to consider your options.
  • If you want to make soap with 5% superfat, then multiply your lye amount with 0.95. Similarly for 8% superfat, multiply lye amount with 0.92
